LAN+MODEM
Quick Start Installation
Remember: LAN+MODEM makes modem sharing as easy as printer sharing.
You can allow anyone on the LAN to access any modem on the LAN. The
person with the installed modem can continue working as others dial
in or out of the network using the shared modem(s).
1. MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THE LAN+MODEM DISKETTE
2. DO A DIRECTORY OF THE LAN+MODEM DISKETTE
Enter DIR a:
The Serial number of your software will appear after the word
VOLUME. The following files should appear on the listing:
MCOM.EXE This is a TSR (TERMINATE & STAY RESIDENT) background
program that designates the modems as shareable on the
network. MCOM is normally loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
of the PC with the modem that you want to share.
NETDEV.COM This is a TSR program normally loaded onto a menuing
system or batch file of any other computer on the network
which needs to access, with third party communications
packages, those modem(s) that have been made shareable
by MCOM.EXE program.
README.DOC Contains recent additions to the documentation made
since the last release.
HELP.DOC If you're having problems, read this file for support
tips.
UCOM.EXE This program is available as an optional module to
LAN+MODEM. UCOM is the CCC "communications" program that
is designed to work in conjunction with the MCOM program.
UTIL<DIR> A subdirectory: This subdirectory contains useful
utilities for enhancing modem performance over your
network. These utilities are also helpful with installing
a new release of your LAN operating system. They will
ensure your new operating system is as clean as the one
you had installed. The files within this UTILITIES
subdirectory are not normally used during your first
installation. The contents and descriptions of these
files can be found in the LAN+MODEM documentation.
3. COPY THE DISKETTE FILES ONTO THE FILE SERVER.
For demonstration purposes, unless otherwise stated, it will be
assumed throughout this quick start section that LAN+MODEM will be
installed in the F:\LANMODEM subdirectory. You can install the
LAN+MODEM software anywhere on the network.
Start by placing the LAN+MODEM diskette into drive A:. At the DOS
prompt, execute the following instructions:
F:
CD\
MD\LANMODEM
CD\LANMODEM
XCOPY A: *.* /S
The software necessary to run LAN+MODEM is now installed in the
F:\LANMODEM subdirectory.
The utilities are now installed in the F:\LANMODEM\UTIL subdirectory.
4. DESIGNATING WHICH MODEMS ARE SHAREABLE ON YOUR LAN.
Load the MCOM.EXE file into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file of the workstations
with modems that are designated as shareable.
If you have two modems simply execute MCOM.EXE twice in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file as follows:
MCOM
MCOM
One common use of LAN+MODEM is to install it on a computer that was
previously dedicated as a bulletin board or an E-Mail server. In that
case, if the Bulletin Board or E-Mail modem is on COM1 then run
MCOM.EXE followed by the # of the COM PORT on which your shareable
modem resides. For example, a Bulletin Board modem uses COM1 and you
want to put another shareable modem on that computer on COM2, then
put in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file the following command:
MCOM 2
5. NAMING MULTIPLE MODEMS WITH THE MCOM PROGRAM.
For naming the modem drivers LAN+MODEM uses the series COMM01-COMM20
for the 20 modem version (the maximum name number is based on the
version you have). When you have modems with different
characteristics and/or maximum speeds, you can select the name for
each modem driver with a command line option. For example, if you
have a 9600 BPS modem and a 2400 BPS modem and you want to access
them by name, you can name the COM PORT where each modem resides.
To do this, change the AUTOEXEC.BAT command to MCOM followed by
'COMM#' where # is a number from 01 to 20. As an example for the 9600
BPS modem:
MCOM COMM10
And for the 2400 BPS modem:
MCOM COMM11
To access the modems designated as COMM10 and COMM11, see Sections 6
and 7.
6. ACCESSING SHAREABLE MODEMS ON YOUR LAN WITH UCOM.EXE.
There are two ways to access the shareable modems. One is by running
the UCOM program which accesses the shareable modem. The second is by
running the NETDEV.COM program which allows you to run other
compatible communications programs.
To access a shareable modem with UCOM.EXE, just type in the command:
UCOM
You will access the first available shared modem on the network. In
the example in section 5, UCOM will first select the 9600 BPS modem,
and if it is busy, it will select the 2400 BPS modem.
To select a specific modem, such the 9600 BPS modem in section 5,
then name the modem in a command line by following UCOM with the
command "COMM#" as is used by the MCOM program. For example,
UCOM COMM10
To select the 2400 BPS modem in section 5, enter the UCOM command
followed by the command COMM11. for example:
UCOM COMM11
7. ACCESSING SHAREABLE MODEMS ON YOUR LAN WITH OTHER COMMUNICATIONS
PROGRAMS
To access a modem with a third party communications program that has
a network interface (known as an INT14H interface) you must use the
NETDEV.COM command at the workstation that needs to the modem. There
is no change in the MCOM.EXE setup.
Examples of programs that have an INT14H driver (or network driver)
are:
1. PROCOMM PLUS NETWORK VERSION 7. CC:Mail
2. REFLECTION 8. Westlaw-Westmate
3. CROSSTALK MARK IV 9. PC Anywhere
4. LEXIS/NEXIS 10. Windows 3.0 Dynacom
5. CO/SESSION LAN 11. DCS-EM320
6. SMARTERM 12. Broadview-Pibterm
Details on setting up these communications programs to address our
NETDEV program is contained in a README file on the diskette and in
the manual.
The only difference between setting up a third party software package
and setting up the UCOM program is the additional need to "Open a
Channel to the Modem." This is done by following the NETDEV command
with an OPEN command. For example, to install PROCOMM PLUS NETWORK
VERSION you would use a batch file in your network menuing system:
1. NETDEV 4. NETDEV/CLOSE
2. NETDEV/OPEN 5. NETDEV/DISAB
3. PCOMNET
This batch file would open the channel and find the first available
modem on the network that you designated as shareable with the MCOM
file. Then PROCOMM PLUS NETWORK VERSION would have full control of
the modem.
To access a specific "named" modem on the network, use the "START"
command. For example, to access the 9600 BPS modem designated as
COMM10 in section 5, run the command:
1. NETDEV 4. PCOMNET
2. NETDEV/START=10 5. NETDEV/CLOSE
3. NETDEV/OPEN 6. NETDEV/DISAB
Please Note: The above method of accessing modems with other
communications programs is valid for all compatible programs except
the CO/SESSION software. CO/SESSION has written an interface to
LAN+MODEM eliminating the need for the "OPEN" command after the
NETDEV command. Therefore a sample batch file for running CO/SESSION
looks like this:
NETDEV
Optionally, NETDEV/START=10
SUPPNET -I2

in the manual.
